Tech IT Easy: 'Blue' Movies On Your Phone

For the sake of discussion, let's say you and I are going on a trip together. We check in and the airport required three hours before departure (or maybe two), then what? We could browse the stores, we could find a screen to confirm our departure gate, and we could read a newspaper. But that's all low tech, and this is a high-tech column.

If we are truly tech savvy, and we are, we will turn on our Bluetooth connection and allow all that information to come to us instead. Flight updates, shopping specials and all sorts of other relevant information can now be sent to our mobile phone at no cost to us.

The system, under the name Bluwave, will offer these services at both international airports in short order. But let's go beyond the airport. Imagine coming off the bus at the HWT Transport Centre and turning on your Bluetooth - your phone lights up with an alert, you see there is the latest music video from the hottest artiste and you are the first to see it, that's cool. Better yet, you see what looks like a TV commercial telling you they have an in-store special for passengers with their bus pass valid for only 30 minutes, that's rich. Best of all, your phone tells you a hurricane is on the way you should head home, that's really helpful.

Tech Time: Twitter Ettiquette

Twitter is a popular micro-blogging service that allows you to post messages of up to 140 characters in length. The site/service is simple and easy to use attracting the attention of celebrities and laymen alike. Everything from trivial musings to profound thoughts are shared with Twitter followers around the globe.

The first step to joining the Twitter revolution is to set up an account at Twitter.com. Only the most basic information is required and your Twitter account can be linked to a number of other services including YouTube, Foursquare and LinkedIn.

In addition to the website, Twitter can be accessed through a number of apps and third party applications such as Twitter for Blackberry, iPhone and Android, Tweet Deck and Uber Twitter.

With these apps, Twitter is mobile and easier to manage; the apps also facilitate posting to multiple Twitter profiles and/or multiple social networking platforms, including Facebook.
Leetspeak is popular on the short messaging service, but Twitter has a lingo of its own; followers, tweeples, tweets, reply, mention and hash tags all have a Twitter meaning, which may or may not mirror the original meaning of the terms.

Tweets (or postings) can be enhanced with images, which can be embedded in the tweet, and links for which the addresses can be shortened to maximise the 140-character limit. Additional care is needed to ensure that Twitter shortened URL’s don’t point to viruses and other malware.

That said, it seems everyone is on Twitter (or secretly wants to be). Some people set up Twitter accounts just to read what others have to say. Others actively participate in the discussion. There are very few rules to Twitter and fewer accepted standards, but some courtesies do apply, such as:
You don’t have to read every single tweet
You don’t have to respond to every mention
Quote the original tweet in your reply or be specific so others can follow the conversation
Credit the original author, but not everyone who retweeted the post
Don’t curse, Twitter is public and you have no control over who can see it
Check links before retweeting and cite the source
The rest, make up as you go along
Happy tweeting!

Windows 7 Tip: To get the Vista style taskbar back Right-click an open area on the Taskbar and select Properties. The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties windows opens up where you will want to click the box next to “Use small icons” and select “Combine when taskbar is full” from the drop down next to Taskbar buttons. Now the Taskbar look similar to how it did in Vista. It doesn’t look exactly the same but has similar functionality.

Tech Time: WiMAX

In simple terms, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access or WiMAX, means wireless broadband. Imagine if you will, a giant hotspot right across the island with high-speed Internet access. That’s WiMAX.

WiMAX offers speeds comparable to DSL and cable with download speeds of up to 10 Mbps. It also offers comparable reliability and accessibility. But, that is where the similarities end.

Notably, WiMAX is consumer installed. Pick up a WiMAX modem from the local mobile or computer store, plug it in and it is installed. No CDs, software drivers or technicians necessary to get the service up and running in minutes.

Because WiMAX by definition is wireless, no landlines or hardwire installations are needed. That means, no wait times, no need to have strangers visit your home and no ugly cables running all over the house.

Thousands of towers have been upgraded to facilitate island wide wireless broadband making the service readily accessible to most Jamaicans living in populated areas. The wireless 4G signal is available in many locations where cable and DSL are not available.

WiMAX really sets itself apart from hardwire Internet options with its mobility. With a USB dongle, WiMAX users can take the high-speed Internet on the road.

Of course, WiMAX wouldn’t be a practical option if not comparable on cost, which it is. Both pre and post-paid plans offer unlimited data transfer with competitive fees.

All in all, WiMAX is fast, reliable, mobile, easy and cheap, like the Internet should be.

Tech Time: Blackberry OS 6.0

With the increasing popularity of innovative smart phone platforms like iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile, Research In Motion (RIM) have had to step up their game to remain competitive, and they do this with the soon to be released Blackberry OS 6.0.

The very first thing that users will notice is the redesigned home page which is highly customisable. Long overdue feature like an updated media player, universal search and powerful browser bring the new OS inline with features already available on iPhone and Android devices.

Blackberry uses OD 6.0 to improve some features for which BB already has the lead, making a great user experience even better. The new embedded image feature will boost the robust Blackberry email while the wildly popular Blackberry Messenger (BBM) gets s sexy new look and easier interface.

Smart phones have revolutionaries the way we communicate; mobile social networking is critical to the success of any handset. Blackberry recognising this truism, has integrated social networking into the OS has offers simultaneous posting to multiple social networking platforms.

The official announcement is expected later today with a roll out perhaps as soon as later this month. RIM is also expected to announce the launch of the Blackberry Bold 9800 also called the Torch, RIM’s first slide phone set to rival the iPhone 4.

Windows 7 Tip: Click on the Options tab in the Windows 7 calculator of a range of different calculators. This offers many different unit conversions (length, weight, volume and more), date calculations (how many days between two dates?), and spreadsheet-type templates to help you calculate vehicle mileage, mortgage rates and more.
